Welcome to Christ’s College Chess Club!
Christ’s Chess team was again one of the most successful of the college teams in 09/10, topping Division 2 and reaching the Cuppers final against Trinity I. This year we hope to mount a serious challenge to the Division 1 title, as well as to improve upon what was an almost flawless run in Cuppers.
Currently we field two teams – Christ’s I in Division I & Christ’s II in Division III. A team consists of 5 players, ranked in order of ability. In match play, opposite board numbers play each other and the cumulative score of all 5 games at the end determines the match winner. In terms of scoring, these ‘game’ points count towards a team’s cumulative league points total (for each game, win=1, draw=1/2, loss=0). In addition, the winning team receives 2 ‘match’ points to add to their total. For example, a team that wins 4-1 will receive 4 game points plus 2 match points, giving a total of 6 league points for that match. The loser gets no match points, but retains their game points (in this case, 1 point). In the event of a draw, each team receives their game points plus 1 match point, giving 3.5 points each for that match.
This year we will have a strong team again, with many of last year’s players still available and some strong new additions. Having said that, the team is not exclusive and new players are most welcome, so email me on teg30 if you are interested!
For the general recreational player, there will be a college ladder competition. To work best there should be at least 15 people, so let me know if you want to be a part of it! In addition, there may be some training sessions and a club championship but that is still to be decided.
All that remains for me to say now is that I hope everyone involved in Christ’s Chess Club has an enjoyable and successful season!
