13th March 2007: Ruari Hamlin wins farewell blitz
The farewell blitz - the last event of the season where we say farewell to our departing committee, wrap up another year of chess and start to panic about rapidly-approaching exams - was held last Saturday, 10th March. The turnout was somewhat disappointing, though this was probably connected with the Varsity Match being held on the same day. In the end an exciting finish saw Ruari Hamlin take first place with a score of 4.5/5, closely followed by runners-up Stephen Cairns and Aloysious Han on 3.5/5. Congratulations to Ruari, and to all involved with a successful year for CUCC.

The Freshers' Varsity Match took place in Oxford last Sunday, with a squad of 13 players making their way down to The Other Place. After a pub lunch shared by the two teams, the match itself was very close and hard-fought, with all games lasting at least 90 minutes. Sadly, in the end we lost by the slender margin of 6.5-5.5 (the bottom board was not counted as Oxford fielded a second-year on that board). Robert Dover won the best game prize with a fine tactical victory against a strong opponent. For more information see the match report, or a selection of games.
