Saint Andrew's Night Party

Date: Wednesday 30 November 2005
Venue: Breakfast room, Harvey Court, Gonville&Caius

7:30pm, Despite a nervous start everything was set up before 7:30 and there was little to do but wait for people to come. Those who wanted to eat came early and had their portion of delicious bigos (cooked by Ewa), whereas others arrived late (which made our President a bit worried). However, after 9pm the room was full and the fun with predicting the future could start. The idea is to pour wax through a hole in a key onto cold water. From the shape formed one can deduce what the coming year will bring… And so we had a camel, a rabbit, a butterfly, a ghost and other things. For the interpretation you'd have to ask Tomasz Bak, the society's fortune teller. Those who came could also find out how likely they are to get married. This is done in the following way: girls take off their left shoe and put it on the floor one after another. Then, the shoe from the end goes to the front and the cordon walks towards the door. The owner of the shoe which is first to leave the room will be the first to get married of the girls who gathered that evening. The same was done for the boys (not everyone wanted to participate) and close to the door shoes started forming a zigzag. Apparently men aren't very keen to get married. The ‚winner‘ wanted to stay anonymus. After this drinking continued till late, while Zubrowka and Czech beer ran out. The Lithuanian and Hungarian liquors weren't very popular – you have to be really drunk to be able to swallow those… This was our last event of the term. We wish you all a nice Christmas holidays and hope to meet you next term for more drinking / Central European events. Those of you who travel to Central Europe: do bring a lot of vodka with you. We'll need it for the Baltic Sea Vodka Party!
