The impact of EU membership on Slovakia by Dr Timothy Haughton

Date: Wednesday 9 November 2005
Venue: Junior Parlour, Gonville & Caius

5pm

Following a series of talks on the Central European countries Dr Tim Haughton gave a talk on the Slovak politics in the last 15 years. The talk provided a valuable insight into the Slovak domestic situation and tried to answer the question as to what drives the Slovak politics. Members of the audiance found out for example why Czechoslovakia partitioned or that there are 27 parties in a 150-people Slovak parliament. A very intesting talk indeed!

Dr Tim Haughton is a Lecturer in the Politics of Central and Eastern Europe at Birmingham University, having previously taught at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London and Sheffield and Comenius Universities. He has published widely on the politics of East-Central Europe, especially parties, institutions and political actors in Slovakia. Dr Haughton is the author of Constraints and Opportunities of Leadership in Post-Communist Europe and is beginning work on a book exploring the politics of Central and Eastern Europe.
