Formal at Queens'
Date: Sunday 6 November 2005
Venue: Queens' college
7 for 7.30pm
Despite the initial stress among some of the committee members the event went smoothly and was termed a great success (of our organisational efforts, I suppose). It was thrilling to see Ewa and Tomek M. running around (not so thrilling when Tomek started shouting… but most of us won't remember that!) To our disappointment we were seated in a modern-looking hall, more reminescent of a gym than of a Cambridge canteen. As we were told Queens' do have a different hall, but rumour has it that the Queens' officials were worried that the Central Europeans could profane their precious old courts. The food was very nice (just nice according to others) with fried salmon for main course and fruit salad for dessert. We thought that this healthy nutrition called for a supplement in equally healthy wine (ie not the one sold at Queens') which is why at the end of the formal we had to pour our wine into bottles void of Queens' wine. [If you ever go to a Queens' formal you might like to know that you won't be admitted to the college bar carrying wine that was bought elsewhere] After the meal we returned to the college bar and continued drinking until we were told to go away. It was a lovely evening!
