The Organ
The two Organ Scholars play an important role in the life of the Chapel and College.
Senior Organ Scholar: Duties and Responsibilities
The Senior Organ Scholar co-ordinates and arranges the choir and music for services in the College Chapel. S/he is responsible to and works in conjunction with the Chaplain and Precentor, who have charge of the chapel, and is assisted by the Junior Organ Scholar.
Within this framework, the Senior Organ Scholar's responsibilities include:
- Selecting and preparing music for each term, subject to the Chaplain's approval, and publishing a list.
- Conducting the choir during chapel services and rehearsing the choir beforehand.
- Organising singing lessons for members of the choir.
- Ensuring the smooth running of the choir, including recruitment, adequate provision of music scripts and good order in the music library. Choir members are encouraged to help in organisation and planning.
- From time to time organising concerts in which the choir perform, including the May Week concert. (There are regular visits to cathedrals and churches).
- Ensuring that the Junior Organ Scholar has familiarity with, and experience of, these duties.
The Senior Organ Scholar is an ex-officio member of the Bene't Club committee, the College music society, and arranges concerts and recitals and stimulates the musical life of the College.
Organ Scholars have a key role in College life and their work is much appreciated by members of the College community.
Benefits:
- The Scholarship has a grant of £300 p.a.
- Organ lessons paid for by College (4 per term).
- I7 New Court is reserved for the Senior Organ Scholar - a large room with a Steinway piano.
- A telephone is provided for scholarship business (rental and business calls paid for by the College).
Junior Organ Scholar: Duties and Responsibilities
The Junior Organ Scholar assists the Senior Organ Scholar in providing music for Chapel services. Responsibilities include:
- Accompanying the chapel choir in services, rehearsals, and concerts.
- Giving general assistance to the Senior Organ Scholar in his/her duties (including the Bene't Club), sharing responsibilities as appropriate, and generally under-studying the Senior Organ Scholar's role.
- The Junior Organ Scholar is an ex-officio member of the Bene't Club committee.
Benefits:
- The Scholarship has a grant of £300 p.a.
- Organ lessons paid for by the College (4 per term).
- O2 Old Court is reserved as the Junior Organ Scholar's room, with a grand piano.
Organ Scholars need to work in partnership with one another and with other musicians to achieve the best results.
The College has a fine 3 manual Mander organ built in 1968 and restored in 1997 by David Wells Organ Builders of Liverpool.
Applications for Organ Scholarships
Applications for these must be made on the white form before the beginning of September in the year before you plan to come up, in other words, six weeks before the deadline for the blue application form. An Organ applicant who is accepted then has no more interviews. An unsuccessful applicant will not be disadvantaged in his or her chance of an academic place. Make sure that you get your white application form from the Admissions Office in good time.
