Welcome!
Caius Boat Club, founded in 1827, is the rowing club of Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge.
Caius Boat Club is the largest Sports team in Caius, with more freshers starting rowing than any other sport or club.
We hold a strong position as one of the fastest Rowing teams in Cambridge, our 1st VIII remained unbeaten in college rowing in the season 2010/11, and we pride ourselves on taking students from their first strokes all the way to representing the university. Every year many students join Caius who already row, and become members of a strong squad system.
Anyone is welcome to row for Caius, to get involved, click here.
If you already row, and are thinking of applying to Caius then contact us at applications@caiusboatclub.org for information and advice.
The club also hosts the college's fireworks night, runs the boatie cocktails, swaps regularly with the boat clubs of other colleges and runs the termly Boat Club Dinners.
Caius Boat Club is well funded and runs a large boathouse on the River Cam, containing top of the range racing shells, a fully equipped weightlifting gym and host of other fitness equipment.
We are proud to be sponsored by: &

Winter Head to Head
Caius Dominant at Winter Head to Head.
Caius Women take the top spot today, both in our race report and on the river, a truly landmark achievement for the Club. With a strong row in dirty water, The Caius W1 crew took their opposition to sword and came through with an immense margin over their competitors, over the 2 by 2000m race.
They beat Clare, City, Christ's, Pembroke, Xpress, Catz, 99s, Murray Edwards, FaT, Queens, Emmanuel, Selywn, Magdalene, Cantabs, Kings, Tit Hall, as well as some M2 crews (and Wolfson M1...). So this is no easily won victory. The 37 second margin to the next fastest women's eight is also encouraging: Giles Moon is going to be insufferably smug!
M1a and M1b, our two Caius Squad eights, also acquitted themselves well, Taking the top spot and the 5th spot. Only Downing, Queens and Selywn intervened. M1b will certainly be out to beat Selywn this term, especially once the lineup settles and they move into the Barabino. M1a came through 13 seconds clear of Downing, an acceptable margin, but it carries a lot of room for improvement, with selection still a week or two off. Frustratingly, neither the lightweights or Cantabs raced.
W2 also raced well, coming the top Women's Mays Div 3 crew and 3rd Women's W2 overall. With a new coach and a lot of commitment, this boat is expected to have a very strong term, and even having 8 truly committed rowers is a great step after Lent terms past.

Caius Dominate Fairbairn Cup
The Caius Senior Men dominated the Fairbairn cup, the 1st VIII beating the University Lightweight Crew, all Cambridge College crews, and the Pembroke (Oxon) crew that beat the Oxford lightweights so soundly the week before.
The 2nd VIII meanwhile came 8th out of all Cambridge college crews, beating the 1st VIIIs of such previously reputable institutions as Trinity, Pembroke and Trinity Hall.
As such the men's squad is in a fantastic mood and eager to capitalise on this ground over the Winter break. With all three of our male triallists rowing in the trial eights, further speed for the Lent Bumps will very much have to come from within the squad... and the other 3 non-trialling rowers who may join us next term.
Meanwhile in the Women's side we saw the most succesful results since 2006, half a decade ago! The women's 1st VIII came 6th, but were 4th to the half way mark, which is closer to that oh so important Bumps distance. All this bodes very well for the Lent Bumps, where the girls are starting 10th. The women's four also did well, despite being composed of the club's 3rd four women (after the two in the eight), it beat four college 1st IVs!
In the novices, the women stole the show, coming 4th! A truly outstanding result with much to credit to their immensely popular LBCs. This was in fact faster than the second men's novice eight! Shame on you boys! The top men's novice eight ended 16th after some very poor luck involving a lost blade.

Fairbairns Preview

Well it's that time of year once again, Fairbairns is upon us, after a tempestuous Clare Novices (terrible conditions led to some undeserved results), and a very successful Winter Head, The CBC heads into fairbairns in good shape.
Crew Lists are also now up!
The Women's side looks set for a game changing result (touch wood),in both the novices and seniors, and will hope to be moving considerably up the start order for next year's races after strong showings at Winter Head, Autumn head (and Queens' Ergs!). The women's novices especially have the chance to break the trend of recent women's novicing at caius, and despite an unlucky Clare Novices, should have their sights set on the top, hopefully their poor luck will provide extra determination.
The Men's side has had a more mixed term than they might be used to: An alarmingly poor start by the 1st four in the Autumn Head, that was rescued to see a dead heat in the final of the University Fours against Queens, shows that success comes only from hard graft, and that there are no laurels to rest on. The crew that won Winter Head sees two changes going into The Fairbairn Cup. Without the blazing Cantabs crew that has so impressed this term, the top spot is there for the taking. The 2nd VIII has been unlucky not to collect silverware this term so far, losing very narrowly at both head races, Fairbairns seems the ideal time to strike. In the Novice men, the usual placing (top 6) was accomplished at Queens' Ergs, and a strong showing at Winter Head gives hope that a fine Fairbairns result can be accomplished, in line with recent records (3rd, 2nd, 3rd).

History and the Archives of CBC
Your boat club needs YOU!
Caius Boat Club has long been one of the most popular and successful societies of Gonville & Caius College, and in the past twenty years it has been arguably the most successful boat club on the Cam. But imagine if, in years to come, the only people to remember that were those of us lucky enough to have been there at the time.
At present we are in danger of this becoming the case: it has become apparent that the past twenty years of CBC's history is only sparsely documented in the College's archives (including a number of fantastic headships and most of the history of women's rowing at Caius). We are very keen to improve the records but in order to do this we need your help. So what can you do?
Firstly, pass the message on; the more Caians are aware of this and able to participate, the more complete a picture we will be able to build. Secondly, please contribute as much of the following information as possible about your time at CBC:
- Results - Fairbairns, Lents and Mays are always the club's primary focus, but any information on other major events attended (Head of the River; Henley) would also be brilliant.
- Crew lists - be it M1 or W5 (have we ever had one?), we'd like to know who raced in what boat and when, and any additional information you can give us about them (we know the weights of most of the men who rowed for CBC in the first half of the twentieth century, though currently not the names of those from the last decade!), as well as details of who was on the club committee and anyone who rowed for the University.
- Photographs - of CBC crews, races and victories; and of some social events, particularly crew shots from Boat Club Dinners.
Please email any contributions to me at kjm49@cam.ac.uk with 'CBC' and the relevant year in the subject. Any non-digital photographs can be posted to the College archives (at Gonville & Caius College, Trinity Street, Cambridge, CB2 1TA), either as copies or as originals to be copied and returned, but please email ahead so we know to expect them. If you have any questions, queries or thoughts, please do not hesitate to contact me on the above address, or else the archives directly at archivist@cai.cam.ac.uk.
Thank you so much for your co-operation, hoping to hear from many of you soon!
Kate McQuillian
(ex-CBC secretary and trainee archivist)

May Bumps 2011
The Caius 1st VIII take the headship of the May Bumps, rowing over ahead of Downing in an exhilarating final battle. After falling back in the first section of the race, a resolute Downing crew never gave up the chase and, far from breaking, redoubled their exertions, pushing all the way to Chesterton. All other crews fell far behind, unable to match the pace of the leaders.
2011 May Bumps day 4 M1
Elsewhere the club was not so lucky, the W1 and M4 boats acquiring spoons, M2 and W2 holding station and M3 going down 3. Next year we hope the lessons learned by the members of the first boat will be passed through the club, and that CBC will continue to rise throughout the ranks.

The New Caius Boathouse
The Caius boathouse has been a characteristic feature of the riverbank since 1879, but unfortunately over 130 years this 19th century construction has started to subside on one half of the building. Since the latest renovations in the 1980s, the boat club has continued to grow, with student membership now greater than 80, and the original boathouse catered for neither this volume of people, nor for women's rowing. Recently Caius has also achieved a high standard on the river, with the most recent success in the Lent Bumps making it twenty headships since 1998, and rowing has become an important part of college life.
The boat club and the college therefore wish to improve the standard of the riverside facilities as best as possible, not only to accommodate the needs of the current crop of rowers, but to also celebrate the success of previous generations with the addition of a clock tower. The design of the new boathouse has been carefully considered, first as a result of design competitions, secondly by employing a very experienced and able architect from Bland, Brown and Cole, and further by progressing the scheme in close consultation with the City Council's planning and conservation department, club representatives, neighbours and an expert project committee. The new design aims to encapsulate traditional waterfront features within a boathouse brimming with modern training and changing facilities and increased racking space, whilst plans have been made with sustainability in mind. These designs will require the complete demolition and rebuilding of the boathouse but will keep the style of the original red bricks, clay tiles and Caius blue doors, whilst increasing the upstairs floor space for improved dry training facilities and shower areas for the women.
The project also includes the renovation of college accommodation for graduates with partners along Ferry Path, which is also in great need of refurbishment and the designs for both buildings have been met with general approval by local residents. The college hopes construction of the new buildings will be funded by donations and so this project will not detract from educational funding, or from other areas of college life.
The old boathouse has seen many successes over the past couple of decades and many oarsmen and oarswomen will be sad to see it go, but hopefully this new boathouse will serve even better the many future generations of Caius rowers.
- Peter Walker,
Captain of Boats

May Term Rowing
May Term approaches, the Sun emerges once again and rowing on the cam becomes an entirely more enticing prospect...
The men's squad are looking for previous rowers to fill out the lower boats (boats 3 through 6) and form both a gentleman's eight, and a "beer boat". Whether you want to train two times a week or ten, get in touch with Ed (edc28).
These boats have high probabilities of sun, stash and blades, so get involved.
