FOUNTAINS FELL Permits (Closed season; 1st November until 2nd week-end of May)

Becka, apparently your Hammer Pot request is getting very popular. Have you decided for the dates you want? I'm also getting GINGLING for Sarah, so in case anyone else is interested please let me know the dates. (Serena)

26th-27th January 19th-20th January:

Derbyshire, TSG hut; possible caves include Titan if we can find leaders, Peak Cavern for a good Sunday trip, P8 and Oxlow for SRT practice.

Serena: I'd add nettle pot as a saturday/sunday trip, near oxlow. it has some lovely formations. (permit for both at a farm on the day). Re. the Titan trip an exhange as last year with JH would be nice and maybe we could also get white series or however it's called. (to piss off the people at the showcave :) )

Wookey: Do you mean Peak Cavern, White River Series? Very nice indeed I gather. I'm in favour of JH/Titan/Peak white river as I've never been to any of them.

Toby: I'd love to White River again, if nobody gets strung-up! Particularly if I can take a camera...

9th-10th February: 2nd-3rd February:

Yorkshire, Brackenbottom (or YSS); possible caves include Sell Gill and others (insert appropriate cave name here!)

Serena: History goes that Sell gill is boring (no direct experience here) and by that time we want to engage novice with more demanding trips. I've heard that Illusion is pretty and we could redo some of the caves that I booked for NY. Leck fell is better in this case because then it's closed in March-June: Lost John's and Notts 1 are supposed to be the best ones that need permit and the kingsdale area doesn't require advance booking like rowten, etc...) (am I talking bulls**t?).

Wookey: Not sure about Leck dates, but yes do notts/lost johns when permits are available. multiple routes in LJ can absorb a lot of people. Sell gill is good 1st SRT cave and not too badly affected by rain, but if people are past that point then there are plenty of more exciting options.

Toby: I think the Leck Fell close season is April/May/June; Lost Johns' is a good cave for lots of SRT!

Toby: SOC are in Swinsto on Saturday, so I may sneak off to join them for the day.

23rd-24th February: 16th-17th February:

South Wales, Whitewalls; Aggie and Daren for a miserable Saturday and Craig a Fynnon on Sunday.

Lucy: One small thing - whitewalls may not like us much after last yr (key loss). should be ok but just in case can anyone think of alternatives?

Serena: Dar-Yr-Ogof??? I guess we can get leaders through WSG or Lucy's dad.

Wookey: Dan-yr-ogof is a very long drive from whitewalls (other end of Brecon Beacons). Best to do nearby caves, or if you fancy a drive then Draenen is closer. On the other hand DYO is arguably the finest cave in wales so worth a drive if that's when leaders are available - just need to plan for it.

Toby: If we can't do Whitewalls (and I don't see that they'd not want us back - it wasn't really our fault), then is SWCC a good alternative? Then we could sensibly do DYO (and OFD - but keep away from the Trident, please!)

Edvin: I don't think there will be any problem getting access to either Whitewalls or the Aggie key: Nial has organised two trips there since the one when the key was nicked.

Kathryn: I would very much like to go to Whitewalls and do miserable Daren and Aggie trips - we've already been to the OFD type area once this year (though Dan yr Ogof would be nice).

8th-9th March: 1st-2nd March:

Yorkshire, Greenclose Hut; any Gaping Ghyll cave and many others.

Serena: plenty of stuff in the GG/allotment area...ah, for those of you that border into masochism, Becka has asked me to organise an Hammer Pot permit for herself and julian and I guess that they'll be willing to get more company :).

Wookey: I'll volunteer. Previous times the rest of my team wimped out at various bits on the way in.

Toby: Hammer (and Fountains Fell in general) needs to be booked before the start of January - they do permits a full calendar year at a time.

Becka (via email, posted by Kathryn): It would probably be an idea to apply for a couple of dates for Hammer (I assume we don't pay?) because it's flood prone so if we had a wet weekend (likely in March) it'd be off anyway ... so since Patrick probably couldn't make the earlier one, maybe you could try for your original date plus a one in the summer (if you don't mind ...). Thanks!

Toby: I'm up for Hammer again, as long as I get a big lardy breakfast. One needs more than just sausage butties!

Edvin: Toby, you cheeky scamp! I'd be keen to do Alum Pot (or Diccan) on one of the Yorkshire trips: don't think we need permits for those.

Kathryn: One is more than welcome to cook ones own lardy breakfast if one so wishes!

Toby: Yes, one could cook one's own breakfast - one may even do so when a 4pm start is acceptable...  ;-) Alum/Diccan can be a fun dangle; however, I found Diccan down-and-back reasonably chilly even with a party of two - definitely plan for the cold if more are doing it. For example, exchange with Alum, or separate riggers and de-riggers. No permit required for these, or any of the Long Churn caves - they are your domain for 50p per caver per day at Selside Farm.

General comments

Lucy: On the 25th Nov I will book the dates, huts and caves suggested, with alterations proposed. If anyone doesn't like this list, say so before next saturday.

Toby: At the moment, I'm planning to be away with CUHWC on all their trips. I'll probably also head up to Scotland on 19/20 January, 16/17 February and 22/23 March (Easter weekend) - CUCC members invited! This leaves 2/3 Feb, 23/24 Feb, 1/2 March and 15/16 March as my best weekends. I'm trying to organise to do stuff with SOC outside of term, but could do a Yorkshire trip with one day with each club, or take 2-3 CUCC members as guests. (P.S. obviously I don't expect the whole club calendar to revolve around me! But I do want to be a useful driver...)

Kathryn: Umm yeah, just noticed we've managed to clash perfectly with almost all of the hillwalking trips. These are only suggested dates - nothing has been booked yet. Kathryn 11:48, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Toby: At present, I think I'd choose CUCC over CUHWC for 26/27 January and 9/10 February, and vice versa for 8/9 March, meaning I'd miss the Yorkshire trips. Could make both of those if they were each moved a week earlier. In fact if everything were one week earlier, I could go on them all, and do Scotland on 23/24 February and 22/23 March...

Kathryn: Can anyone think of a reason why we couldn't move everything one week earlier? It would mean that the 1st meet would be the weekend after most undergrads arrive back in Cambridge, but thats not necessarily a bad thing, as long as we are organised, as people will probably have less work piled up at that stage.Kathryn 21:52, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Toby: The revised dates certainly suit me! Good points about the start of term; I think the two effects balance nicely, though.

Aaron: Just want to say thanks to everyone who helped work out this schedule, and whoohoo for wiki power in action! I should be able to make most of these meets next term. -Aaron 14:04, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Edvin: I think the updated calendar for Lent Term is from one of the out of date ideas. From the various emails that were sent, weren't the SWales and Peaks meets going to be swapped and Brackenbottom changed to Bull Pot Farm?
