About CAUV

CAUV stands for Cambridge Autonomus Underwater Vehicle, it is a student developed autonomous submarine, with multiple capabilities. The initial design criteria was for a small ROV to inspect the underside of pancake ice flows in the arctic. Developing an AUV that could perform this task remains our long term goal. However, our immediate challenge is the SAUC-e competition.

The design of CAUV is light compact and sleek, at under 7kg it could easily be carried around in a flight case for easy deployment. However by taking advantage of the recent size reduction in electronics and batteries, CAUV also packs a punch, with an endurance of a few hours, and a 1Ghz computer the size of a playing card, CAUV will have the brains to tackle a variety of missions.

We are the lightest AUV to attempt the SAUC-E challenge, at 6.3kg, and won Overall Second Prize in 2007.

About SAUC-E

The Student Autonomous Underwater Challenge – Europe competition is a European wide competition aimed for University level students. The teams must design and build their own AUVs that must attempt an underwater assault course. The course varies from year to year but can consist of gates, drop targets, surface zones, and many other obstacles.

The idea is to simulate real life situations where AUVs could be used commercially. Once the AUV is deployed into the water it must carry out the mission autonomously with no external communication. Points are awarded for overall design and the performance in the final run.

The competition encourages students to become more enthusiastic about innovation and developing new AUV technologies. Such a competition can provide an excellent platform for students to learn practical teamwork and problem solving skills. AUVs have the potential to solve many industrial problems and thus are an area of rapid development.
