Welcome to Cambridge University Casual Sailing Club

We are a section of Cambridge University Cruising Club (CUCrC), and together with the windsurfing, yachting and team sailing sections offer you all the sailing you could ever need, and probably more.

The casual section, offers sailing every week, with opportunities to take part in RYA courses, fleet racing with Grafham Water Sailing Club, or simply the opportunity to leave Cambridge for an afternoon, relax with some friends and learn a few new skills mucking around in boats.

Please browse around our website and that of CUCrC to give you an idea of what we are about. You should be able to find details of our committee, our fleet of boats our programme and our trips. If you are new to the University or simply new to the club, check out our freshers page to answer all your questions. If you want more information, simply e-mail one of the committee members. Happy Sailing!

Latest Updates:

24 NOVEMBER 2007 - Christmas Regatta and Meal

A reminder that the inaugral Christmas Regatta will be held at Grafham this coming Thursday (29th Nov), with the option of a meal afterwards in the Wheatsheaf pub over the road.

All the details are contained in the Notice of Race.

09 OCTOBER 2007 - Michaelmas Term Training Programme

Details of this term's training programme can be found here. After a very successful squash, there are only a handful of places left on all of the courses, so do hurry to get your forms back to me (either to my pigeonhole in Pembroke or in person at the pubmeet tonight (9pm, Anchor)).

We are still on the look out for experienced sailors to volunteer as instructors: if you can help in any way either shore-based or afloat, please e-mail Sarah.

26 SEPTEMBER 2007 - Welcome back to a New Term

All summer your committee has been working away to bring you the best programme we can - the draft version is available here. Highlights this term include the Casual Sailing Introduction Course (CISC), a Level 2 course provided by Grafham Water Centre, a third Laser II to play with, trapezes and hopefully spinnakers rigged to some/all of the boats and the inaugral CUCS Regatta at the end of term. As usual we will be aiming to provide sailing and pubbing every week in the usual fun and relaxed style perfected over many years of casual sailing!

Anyone new to the club should make sure they find us, and the rest of CUCrC (our parent club), at the freshers' fair on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of term. We should have a big boat outside on Parker's Piece, but if you can't find that then there will be a huge stall inside. Details of the club open day on the Sunday, the squash the following week, and the sailing for the rest of term will all be on offer there.
In the mean time, please browse around the website - in particular the freshers page.

24 APRIL 2007 - CUCrC Spring Squash

Come along to Pembroke New Cellars from 7pm on Tuesday 24th April to find out more about sailing and the cruising club. We'll be there to answer all your questions along with the windsurfing and yachting sections. There's also a free poster from Laser if you take out membership (just £20 for the summer) on the night.

24 FEBRUARY 2006 - Election Results

Following last night's elections, I have great pleasure in announcing next year's casual sailing committee:

President: Ed Gillett (ejg52)
Secretary and H&S Officer: Paul Dickenson (pd268)
Social Secretary & Boatswain: Adrian Hodgson (ah470)

Plans are in the pipeline for next term's sailing including something for beginners, racers and those out for a picnic. If you have any ideas or requests, please get in touch with the committee at soc-cruising-casual-managers@lists.cam.ac.uk.

In the mean time, we have two trips planned for the rest of term, on the 3rd and 10th March. With the weather warming up, now may be the perfect time to dig out your sailing kit, and come sailing.

Pub meets will continue at 9pm on Tuesdays. Next week (28th Feb) we will be in the Pickerel, opposite Magdelene College - we hope to see you there.

21 FEBRUARY 2006 - Curry Night & Elections

Casual sailors will be descending on the Curry King (off Bridge Street) on Wednesday night, at 8pm. All are welcome! Please e-mail Paul to say you are coming. These will be followed by elections for next year's committee. Feel free to come to the curry, even if you don't want to be elected.

15 JANUARY 2006 - Welcome back to a new term!

Casual Sailing continues to thrive, and hopes to offer you the same standard of sailing you've come to expect. Here's what is in store this term...

SAILING
We have at the moment 5 Friday afternoon sailing trips planned. Sadly the minibuses were unavailable for the other weeks. These trips will be aiming to provide something for everyone from begineers to more serious sailors. Although the weather may be cold, the club has a reasonable supply of wetsuits to get you through the worst of it. David will be leading our first trip from Harvey Court, this Friday 1pm. The signup e-mail will be going out shortly.
As ever we will be looking for minibus drivers and those who are willing to provide their own car. They will obviously earn a place on the trip and our eternal gratitude.
You are also welcome to take out our boats when they are not in use by the club, though please read and follow the guidelines on our trips page.

CUCrC ANNUAL DINNER
A fantastic dinner and party with the rest of the club at St. John's College (Sat 28th Jan 7pm)
Only £30 for pre-dinner drinks, 3 course meal, wine and port, guest speaker Iain McDonald Smith, and entry to the after dinner party at the Union.
To book a place, please send a cheque for £30 payable to "CUCrC" to Sarah Chapman at Caius

SOCIALS
Pubmeets will continue every Tuesday at 9pm, Paul will send details soon.
We also hope to have a curry night mid term and possibly another formal.

ELECTIONS
Elections for the section committee will take place in early February. Some of the present committee will be staying on, but we would like plenty of fresh blood to help grow the club. Please ask any of the committee what their job entails (it might remind them) or have a look at the committee pages.

13 SEPTEMBER 2005 - A New Term!

A warm welcome to the University of Cambridge to all the freshers! If you are looking to sail in Cambridge then you are at the right place. Casual sailing caters for all sailors, except possibly those who love it and the cold so much that they find themselves team racing. We offer the possibility to sail every week at Grafham Water - an enormous reservoir 30/40 minutes from Cambridge. You simply sign up for the trips and we will provide whatever level of training, racing or just sailing you require. We also hold a pubmeet once a week, with the opportunity to chat to your committee and fellow members about anything sailing or equally anything not!
What is more, your membership allows you access to the rest of the Cruising Club for all the windsurfing and yachting you could want as well as fantastic socials.

Interested?
Have a look round the rest of the site, especially the FAQ page. Keep checking back as we are updating regularly. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail any member of the committee.

When you get to Cambridge, look out for us at the societies fair (Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th at Kelsey Kerridge SPorts Hall) with the rest of the Cruising Club. We will also be holding a fresher's squash in the second week of term - details will be posted here later.

If you have any questions that you can't find the answer to on this site, then please feel free to email us and ask!
