Dear intercessors

I write to inform you of the sad news that Lord Chan had passed away on
Sat. evening. I did struggle to know why did God allow this to happen
when he is so loved and needed here. But we know it is our loss but his
gain in glory. Have to humble and admit, the ways of God here is beyond
finding out. Please pray for the family at this time. Thank you for all
the prayer support. Picked up this article from an email, not sure if
its useful.

An interview with Rick Warren, Author of The Purpose Driven Life

In an interview by Paul Bradshaw with Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren said:

People ask me, "What is the purpose of life?" And I respond as follows -in a nutshell, "Life is preparation for eternity".

We were not made to last on earth forever, because eventually, God wants us to be with Him in Heaven. One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body - but not the end of me. I may live 60 to 100 years on earth, but I am going to
spend "forever" in eternity.

This is the warm-up act, the dress rehearsal. God wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity. We were made by God and for God, and until you figure that out, life isn't going to make sense. Life is a series of problems. Either you
are in one now, you have just come out of one or you're getting ready to go into another one. The reason for this is that God is more interested in your character than your comfort. God is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making you life happy. We can be reasonably happy here on earth, but that's not the goal of life.

The goal is to grow in character, in Christ-likeness. This past year has been the greatest year of my life but also the toughest, with my wife, Kay, getting cancer. I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountain top, back and forth. I don't believe that anymore. Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it's kind of like two rails on a railroadtrack, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life. No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on. And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is
always something good you can thank God for.

You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems. If you focus on your problems, you're going into self-centeredness, which is "my problem, my issues, my pain." But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get your focus off yourself and onto God and others. We discovered quickly that in spite of the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people, God was not going to heal Kay or make it easy for her. It has been very difficult for her, and yet God has strengthened her character, given her a ministry o helping other people, given her a testimony, drawn her
closer to Him and to people...You have to learn to deal with both the good and the bad in life.

Actually, sometimes learning to deal with the good is harder For instance, this past year, all of a sudden, when the book sold 15 million copies, it made me instantly very wealthy. It also brought a lot of fame that I had never had to deal with before. I don't think God gives you money or fame for you to own an ego or for you to live a life of ease. So I began to ask God what He wanted me to do with this money, fame
and influence. He gave me two different passages that helped me - Corinthians 9 and Psalm 72.

Firstly, in spite of all the money coming in, we would not change our lifestyle one bit. We made no major purchases. Secondly, about midway through last year, I stopped taking a salary from the church. Thirdly, we set up foundations to fund an initiative
we call The Peace Plan - to plant churches, equip leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and educate the next generation. Fourthly, I added up all that the church had paid me in the 24 years since I started the church, and I gave it all back. It was liberating to be able to serve God for free.

We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for possessions? Popularity? Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Or am I going to be driven by God's purposes (for my life)? When I get up in the morning, I sit on the side of my bed and say, 'God, if I don't get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better' ... God didn't put me on earth just to fulfill a "to-do" list He's more interested in what I am than what I do. That's why we're called human beings, not human doings.

"Be kind. Everyone you meet is having a hard time"

God, grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.

Love in Christ
Ray

So in everything, do to others what you would have them to do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophet. (Mat 7:12) Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. (Pr 4:23)

Week 1 - Bible Study 1 (Acts 16)

Dear brothers and sisters,

If you have a good memory, our bible study sessions ended last term at Acts 15, when Paul and Silas set off on their second missionary trip. This Wednesday we will begin from here and look at what happened next.

A brief introduction: (Acts 16)
This is one of the most dramatic chapters in Acts
- Timothy joined Paul and Silas in their missionary work at Lystra
- on their way to Asia they were kept from preaching by the Holy Spirit
- at Philippi, Lydia the woman dealer in purple cloth was converted
- Paul casted out a demon from a possessed slave girl and both Paul and Silas were therefore sent to jail
- Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God in prison when a violent earthquake occured and all the prison doors flew open
- Paul and Silas saved a jailer from commiting suicide and he and his family came to believe in God
- Paul and Silas were finally released from prison

Wow just look at how many things happened in this one chapter! Getting excited? Wanting to know more about the details and the whats and whys? Come join us at the bible study this Wednesday and discuss with the others on this dramatic journey of Paul and Silas.

Dinner at 6.30pm this Wed as usual and you're very welcome to come and help.

Homecall of Dr. Michael Chan (1940-2006)

"...Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection..." (Romans 6)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A faithful servant of the Lord has returned home to receive his reward.

He has gone to great lengths to seek God's kingdom and righteousness both in this country and abroad. We give thanks for his love and sacrifice.

As Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." - John 10:10

May his abundant life be an inspiration for us all too.
Please continue to pray for the family.

To God be the glory.

Latest bulletin on Dr. Michael Chan : Operation Friday 20 Jan at 1.30pm UK Time

Dear brothers and sisters,

We have been informed that Lord Chan has undertaken an operation this afternoon at 1.30pm. According to doctors the forthcoming 24-48 hrs will be a critical period and please when you read this message, spare a minute or two, giving prayer support to Lord Chan and his family.

For we all know we as human are mortal and weak and it's only God who's in control, let us pray hard for the situation and let God's will be done.

In Jesus' name we pray together,
Helen

****************************************
Dear All

Please keep on praying for Michael. The Lord's hand is on His life. He is the One that is sustaining Him. All things whether in heaven or one earth belongs to Him and are subject to Him and Him alone.

During last night, I believe God spoke to me and reminds me, you believe in a God that you cannot see, how come you cannot believe in God working in circumstances that you cannot see.

No matter how many and how harsh the struggle. God always have the upper hand. He is God, there is no other. There is no one or anything that is above our God. He is in charge of life.

Keep praying for God to be revealed and glorify His own name.
He is faithful.

Thursday 19 Jan. UK time 12 midnight

Dear prayer warriors,

Stephen called me this evening to inform us that Michael will be operated on tomorrow Friday 20 Jan at 1.30pm UK Time
This is a delicate and risky operation and the family asks us to cover Michael with all our prayers. Please pray for the chief surgeon, who is a Muslim (he even asked Stephen to pray for him) that his hand will be guided by God to perform this operation.

The septicaemia (blood infection) that Michael was still suffering was found to be originated from the pancreas and this is being dealt with. Otherwise his condition remains stable.

Let us all lift Michael before God's Throne of Grace, committing him to God's care. Once again, the next 24-48 hours will be very critical. Let us pray believing God will do another miracle on our dear brother Michael.

UK time 3pm Thursday 19 Jan

Dear prayer warriors

Irene phoned last evening (Wed 18 Jan) to inform us that Michael remains
stable. He is still jaundiced and still needs various drugs to sustain
him. During their visit, Michael opened his eyes and he recognised the
family members. Praise God for this wonderful improvement. We believe
God is working a miracle in dear Michael's life and let us continue to
plead with God for continued and sustaining improvement in Michael's
condition.

The doctors decided not to operate on Wednesday but will review the
situation with the family today and make a decision as to whether they
will go ahead with the operation on Friday 20th Jan. Please pray that
God will give the doctors wisdom and the family faith and trust to
accept whatever medical decisions are made. The next 24-48 hours are
again very critical in Michael's recovery and may I ask you not to
let-up in your prayers. Some of you are fasting and praying and such
expressions of love and concern are an encouragement to us and the
family.

I am leaving this evening for Gotenburg, Sweden (19-25 Jan) to fulfil a
prior engagement for the ordination of brother David Chan and the
Inauguration of the Scandinavian Chinese Christian Church - Malmo
Congregation on Sunday 22nd Jan. Please pray for me as I travel in
Sweden in these winter weather. Ernest will continue to liaise with the
family and keep you updated of the latest situation.

Whilst writing, may I ask you to pray also for Esther's mother who is
critically ill in ICU in Malaysia and Esther is flying back to Malaysia
this evening (19th Jan) to be with her mother. Please pray for God's
comfort for Esther and the family and a safe journey to Malaysia. Emily
Lim's mother is also very ill and Emily is now in Malaysia to be with
her. Again she needs our prayers and Jason Lim will return to Malaysia
at the end of the month for a visit.

Thank you for standing with us.

UK time: 9.00pm

Dear faithful prayer warriors,

I have just talked with Stephen on the phone, He said that Michael's condition had a set back in the last 4 hours, caused by another blood infection which could be the reason for him to become jaundiced. Doctors have given him drugs again for the blood infection. His lungs are stable and he continues to pass urine but not enough, so he needs further dialysis in the next 24 hours.

The latest CT scan showed some fluid collecting around the head of his pancreas. The surgeons will be making a decision whether he needs an operation on his pancreas tomorrow morning (Wednesday 18th Jan-UK time).

The family would particularly appreciate your prayers for tomorrow.

Again let us continue our fervent prayers for dear Michael. Thank you. The Lord bless you.

Our God reigns. Thank you for all your prayers for Lord Chan and the mission. In times of need, we can draw close together. This is a great blessing for being in the body of Christ. For we are one in Him. Who has removed the barrier of hostility between man and God and one another. Thank God for the fellowship we have in Jesus and each other. Praise be to God. I believe I received the peace of God concerning Lord Chan yesterday. The battle is in His hand. He will win through for us. The Lord is mighty to save. Good will come out of this. That's God's work.

Keep trusting and praying, for He hears our prayers.

Dear prayer warriors,

I have just spoken to Stephen and he reported that Michael is better today compared with yesterday. Praise God for such improvements.

Michael passed more urine and no drug is now needed to stabilise his blood pressure. He is absorbing more food (feeding thru the tube). His oxygen intake is reduced from 60% yesterday to 40%. However, he has a little rash that the doctors do not know from what cause.

Please do not let-up in your prayers for dear Michael. We have received many more responses and these are very encouraging and we have copied some of these for the family. How we pray for God to restore dear Michael to full health in due time.

Irene, Ruth and Stephen (he is having a cold and cough and missed visiting Michael) thank all of you for your love and concern for them. I want to thank you too for your prayers for me and Ernest.

Sunday 15th Jan. UK time 9.30pm

Dear prayer warriors,

Greetings. I have spoken to Ruth this evening and here is a brief summary of Michael's condition.

Michael's condition remains stable but there is an infection in his lungs. The doctors have taken some sputum to find out the becteria so that the correct antibiotics can be administered. Please pray for this worrying development.

Michael continues to have some bowel movements and diarrhoea which means the food given is getting through. Michael continues to pass urine 20mls/phr (normal is 30mls/phr.) The doctors have taken Michael off the dialysis as a test for his kidney function. Michael's face is also not so puffed-up as before.

As we monitor dear Michael's codition, it looks like two steps forward, one step back. Nevertheless, we thank and praise God for every improvement and please continue to uphold our dear brother and the family in your prayers.

Thank you again for the many who have written back to assure us and the family of your prayers and your words of encouragement.

As ever in Christ,

Dear Intercessors

Please continue to pray for Lord Chan and thank God for your prayers. From the way that Lord Chan's health has been swinging, you can see clearly that there is a spiritual battle going on. Continue to affirm that Life belongs to God, no one and nothing else can touch or take it. The enemy cannot come and steal, kill or destroy what belongs to God because the evil one cannot touch God's anointed. The battle belongs to the Lord and if God is for us, who can be against us. Declare it into the spiritual realm.

Here is an update from Mary. God bless you

Dear prayer partners for Dr. Michael Chan,

I have just heard from Stephen that Michael's condition has 'dramatically' improved.
The needed antibiotics dosage has come down from 18 to 4 and the oxygen intake has also come down from 65% to 40%. But the blood infection is still there and the doctors are trying very hard to clear this infection.
Please continue your unceasing prayers on Michael's behalf.
Please also pray for the family.

I am eager to send this out so that we can continue to step-up our prayers for him.

As ever,
Mary

PS. Dr. Michael Chan (Lord Chan of Oxton) is the Chairman of the COCM Council since 1982 in case some of you might not know our conncection.

You may respond to my email address and I will endeavour to pass on all your responses to the family.
Again, please DO NOT call the family phone.
Thank you.

Dear prayer warriors

We have just had a phone call from Ruth informing us that Michael has developed a 'yeast infection' which will affect his blood. The doctors are gravely concerned and have given him antibiotics to counteract this infection and please pray that this is the correct antibiotics. Please step-up your prayers especially for the next 24-48 hours which are very critical in eliminating this infection. It is good to know that his blood pressure is stable and there is some insulin being produced.

Once again, may I ask you to pray unceasingly to our Heavenly Father for His miracle healing on dear Michael if this is God's will. The family is most grateful for your continued prayers and support.

Beloww is update from:
Thursday 5th January 2006-

Dear prayer partners,

Ernest and I have spent the last 4 days with Irene (Michael's wife), Ruth (his daughter) and Stephen (his son) at their home comforting them and helping out in whatever way we could.

Since Michael was admitted to the hospital on new year's eve with acute and severe pancreatitis, his condition has remained critical and in intensive care. Stephen has been minitoring the situation closely everyday and together with them we have been able to visit Michael in the hospital.

I know many of you around the world are praying for Michael and we together with the family have entrusted Michael into God's hand. The medical team are doing all they can and as of today (5th January), Michael's condition remains critical but stable and showed very little signs of improvement. This offers some comfort but he is still very critically ill and the situation may change by the hour.

This email is to ask that you continue your earnest prayers for Michael that if it is God's will for Michael to survive fully this totally unexpected illness, then God will perform a miracle. I do thank God that with the prayers offered by many around the world, Irene, Ruth, Stephen and Janet (Michael's sister) are upheld by the Lord's grace. Their strong faith in God caused them to fully trust that God's will be done in Michael's life and God is glorified in this situation whatever the outcome. I remember Michael chose "For me to live is Christ" as his motto on the Crest when he was ennobled by the Queen as "Baron Chan of Oxton" in 2001 (Lord Chan of Oxton as he is known to many of us).

Let us cry out to our Almighty God in unity as we lift up our dear brother Michael before God's Throne of Grace and Mercy. Let us all pray unceasingly throughout these coming days for Michael's full recovery.

Please remember also the family, Irene, Ruth ,Stephen and Janet from USA and her family. The family thanks each one of you for your prayers for Michael and themselves.

Thank you so much for standing with us and the family. We will update you of any new development.

Your sister,
Mary Wang

Movie night (Sunday 15th Jan) - New Born

Dear brothers and sisters,

You are cordially invited to a movie night on Sunday 15th Jan, details are as follows:

Movie: "New Born" (drama version played by popular Hong Kong actors and actresses, kindly provided by our Winter Camp speaker this year, Dr. Victor Yu)

Date: Sunday 15th January (the evening after Winter Camp, the Sunday before Lent term starts)

Time: 7.30pm (the movie lasts for 1.5 hr)

Venue: Corpus College's Theatre

This is a pre-evangelism tool to attract non-Christians who normally do not come to church and watch the movie, as it does have a subtle Christian message (like "Miracle Box"). Do come and bring along your friends as well.

For details please refer to the promotion leaflet from this link: newborn.ppt

In Christ,
Helen

URGENT Prayer Request for Lord Chan & family

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I would like to draw your attention to the following email describing
Lord Chan [SEEC theme speaker 2005]'s illness. Let us all support Lord
Chan and his family in prayers at this time of distress.

God bless,
Benny.

-----Original Message-----

URGENT Prayer Request for Lord Chan & family (please forward on)

(Lord Michael Chan is the chairman of COCM board and theme speaker in
SEEC 2005)

From: Mary Wang (COCM Director)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

It's Jan 2nd 2006 -12.30 noon UK time

I write this note with a heavy heart as I have just spoken on the
phone to Dr. Stephen Chan, Michael's son, and he informed me that
Michael's condition has deteriorated overnight and his heart, lungs,
and kidneys are not functioning and he is now on a life support
machine. The medical team is not holding out much hope and Stephen
asks us to be prepared should the Lord calls Michael home.

Ernest and I are leaving for Liverpool from Milton Keynes right away
to be with the family. Michael's only sister is flying in from San
Diego, USA and she is arriving around 5pm local time in Liverpool.

Please continue to pray for Michael as we trust him into God's hands
and also for Irene , Ruth and Stephen.

Our whole COCM team is devastated by this sudden turn of events and we
cry out to God for His mercy on dear Michael.

I will do my best to keep you informed of developments.

In Christ,

Mary
