C.A.C.T.U.S. - About Us

Who are we? It always sounds a little philosophical I suppose but it's an important question. From birth people learn to identify things by what function they serve and so links between the answers to questions such as "what is this?" and "what does it do?" help us establish a good basis for communication. It is in the interests of the basis that I have decided to write this page. In the few paragraphs you will find here, I will (hopefully) be able to formulate a clear and accurate definition of what "C.A.C.T.U.S." is and what "C.A.C.T.U.S." does.

Let's get right to the heart of the matter. C.A.C.T.U.S. is a society, plain and simple. We are a group of people with, in parts, common interests and take satisfaction in the running of a forum for those interests. Hedonistic as it may seem to have a society the purpose of which is solely to play games, this is exactly what C.A.C.T.U.S. does. Where there is a game to be played, we strive to have played it. It is not our purpose to be good at these games, although practice does help, but rather to know of them and enjoy the social forum they supply.

Okay, so by and large, this is silly. It's quite unfair to say that we really know what C.A.C.T.U.S. is about but it folly to assume that we have to. We can simply define the common ground of the membership and claim it is a forum for interest in this common ground, whatever we may say about the Society this is fundamentally and dynamically what C.A.C.T.U.S. is and will remain. Games are a diversion, make no mistake on this, but it covers a significant portion of the common ground alluded to earlier. Anyway, back to the point.

C.A.C.T.U.S. began as a group of people who had grown fond of one particular card game and would meet often to play it. In time these meetings branched out into other games and before long we had more than we could count. It then dawned on us that we had already formed a society, we just didn't really recognise it. Before much more time had passed we had established a society with a website, a constitution and a good social forum for all those who relish in the casual enjoyment and social stimulation games can provide.

Card games, board games, strange psychological games; everything now comes under our wings and where it doesn't we set out to make sure it does. That is C.A.C.T.U.S., we are the seekers and practictioners of gameplay. So, I hope that makes things clear. By the way, if you think you know what C.A.C.T.U.S stands for, tell us and we'll gladly put it in our random name generator.
