HISTORY
Caius Athletics club has been in existence since the nineteenth century, when it starts to appear in reports in the Caian and gained representation on the committee of the Amalgamated Clubs (a pre-cursor of the GCSU). In 2002 the college Athletics and Cross Country clubs were formally merged with a new constitution. Successful past athletes include Harold Abrahams, who ran for Great Britain in the 1920 and 1924 Olympics, at the latter winning the gold medal for the 100m and silver for the 4 x 100m, as retold in the film 'Chariots of Fire'. He also held the English long jump record for 32 years, and served as chairman of the Amateur Athletic Association. He did not however succeed at the Trinity Great Court Run, as depicted in the film.

COMPETITION & TRAINING
The College club exists primarily to arrange teams for intercollegiate competition, and does not often engage in training (nor does it necessarily expect it's members to!). Sometimes a weekly run is organised (joing the club mailing list for more info) but for regular training you should investigate the Hare & Hounds (long and middle distance running) and CUAC (field events and sprints). The primary athletics events are Cuppers in early October (it's not far from Summer!) and CUAC Sports at the end of April (ditto). In Michaelmas term are the Freshers' Fun Run and Grantchester Meadows Race, both part of the College League, followed by Cuppers, a championship event which takes place in a country park just outside Cambridge. In Lent term are the Fen Ditton Race, and the Coe Fen and Selwyn Relays, all of which contribute to the College league. Just before term in September is the Annual Chariots of Fire Relay, a charity event through the city centre. For more information about the races look at this page.
