I had the idea for 'The Barber Shop' in Suffolk, just after a runaway firework had chased me round a field, but I didn't write most of it until the day before the deadline. I think I had Edward Albee's 'Zoo Story', Woody Allen's 'God', and 'Ernie's Incredible Illucinations' by Alan Ayckbourn in mind as I was writing, but I hope that something original emerged as well. I think that some of it is a cryptic, egotistical confession about my life, but hopefully it's cryptic enough that you won't notice.

I'd like to thank the entire company for bringing this play from my laptop to the ADC stage, particularly Lou and Shan who have both somehow found time in their very busy lives to direct and produce it. The cast have all been fantastic-I'm very grateful to them all for taking on the script-and the crew have all been brilliant too. I'd also like to thank Henry very much for writing me.

Enjoy the show!
