"Conserving Heritage in Bangladesh: Hindus in a Muslim-Majority Society"
Mr Montasir Rahman GORA
of the NREE Society, Bangladesh
Friday 10th February 2006
5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Winstanley Lecture Theatre
Trinity College, Cambridge
Montasir Rahman GORA of the NREE Society (Bangladesh) came to Cambridge to share his work on the digital preservation of Hindu archaeological sites in Bangladesh with a lecture and display. This is an important piece of work that reflects the peaceful and respectful coexistence of the Hindu minority in the Muslim majority country of Bangladesh.
He recently finished a project on the Kantajee Temple in Dinajpur, a
notable Hindu temple in northern Bangladesh, with the aim of converting heritage and culture into social capital through digital archiving. His work has been published in a book that has received wide acclaim having captured pictures of the 22,000 terracotta tiles of this temple and completing the digitisation of these historical images, which describe the mythical stories of Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and the lives of European and Bengali landlords in eighteenth century Bengal.
Gora's work was commissioned by UNESCO Bangladesh. EID SQUASH

Supporting the Bangladesh Cricket team on their maiden tour of England 2005
Bangladesh v British Universities
10 - 13 May 2005
Fenner's, Cambridge
Cambridge University Bangladesh Society turned out to welcome and support the Bangladesh national cricket team on their first match during their maiden tour of England. The match was played at Fenner's, which is the home of Cambridge University cricket. It was a rare opportunity to intimately mingle with and watch at close quarters a test side where even the spectators and players shared the same bathroom! Dav Whatmore and Habibul Bashara, along with all the other players and staff were extremely approachable.
