Bangladesh Cyclone Sidr Emergency Appeal

As you will be aware at least 3,000 people are now reported dead and
millions are now homeless after a powerful cyclone ripped through southern
and central Bangladesh on the night of Thursday 15th November 2007.

There are huge infrastructural losses to houses, schools and other
property, crops and livestock. Livelihoods have been ruined. In the
Sunderbans, the largest mangrove forest on earth, a world heritage site and
home of the Royal Bengal Tiger, there has been loss of wild life, including
endangered species.

Cambridge University Bangladesh Society appeals to all members of our
scholarly community at Cambridge to make an urgent donation to help deal
with the aftermath of Cyclone Sidr.

Whilst there is an array of aid agencies through which you are encouraged
to make your donations (some listed below) the Society is acting as a focal
depository for cash and cheques. We will pass the funds on to BRAC, a
Bangladesh based NGO that is also the largest in the world. This
international development organisation is also a UK registered charity.

BRAC has already started relief work: 2,500 BRAC staff working in the
affected areas have been mobilised to work on immediate emergency relief
and longer rehabilitation interventions, while assessing the extent of
damage. 10 medical teams with doctors and paramedics are being sent to the
affected areas. Food relief has already been distributed. Distribution of
house building and agricultural inputs will start immediately.

BRAC's relief and rehabilitation work is highly cost effective. A wide
spread and strong infrastructure already exists with staff experienced in
dealing with natural calamities. BRAC has credibility with communities and
is able to effectively and efficiently deliver immediate and long term
relief and rehabilitation efforts.

100% of funds donated at the link below will go to cyclone relief efforts.
