Mafia V - The story (any additions from players are very welcome)
The sleepy village of Opasnost in Central Europe remains reasonably isolated from the modern world of cars, financial shenanigans and government corruption. Its principle sources of foreign exchange are exports of beetroot from the few rugged fields surrounding it and toys for grown-ups from the village's one factory. The village itself lies in the midst of a dense forest, and can only be reached via a single small road that threads its way delicately between dense thickets and cracks in the ground; perhaps caused by some long-forgotten earthquake. The villagers tell stories of demons and spirits emerging from these deep crevasses and haunting the land, particularly at midnight. In the dark winter, rumours abound of children disappearing and of the sound of strange chants resounding through the moonlit nights.
More recently, however, a strange foreigner, claiming to be a long-lost scion of the family inherited the manor of the recently deceased Lord Opasnost, bringing with him wealth, fortune, and an oddly haunted look. That the death of the Lord and the foreign gentleman's arrival happened almost simultaneously crossed only a few minds, and the munificent funeral held shortly after distracted even these. Soon, however, this mysterious individual's presence started to unsettle people and odd explosions and manic voices began to be heard coming down the hill from the mansion on clear nights. Few spoke much to the new owner, and those few said he had made his fortune in pharmaceuticals, and was looking to retire from his company, Parasol.
In the last few days grim clouds been gathering over the region and the people have started to act very strangely. Violent rows keep breaking out among neighbours, friends and even family members, and the local police are stretched to their limits (all three of them) controlling the outbreaks of violence. As the injuries pile up and the questions start to fly around the village, it only takes a few days for the first casualty. The village idiot charged at one of the townsfolk with a large blade, but tripped and fell upon it, bleeding to death within a few moments. Upon examining his body, the village Doctor came across something very curious lodged in his brain – a wriggling larva of something very strange and very wrong.
It is theorised that this parasite has, thus far, only infected a few of the villages, but the changes that have come upon these few are pronounced. They begin to have strange murderous desires, foreign to their natural genial nature. They feel the need to kill, to destroy! Those possessed communicate by subtle pheremonic signals, and can sense the infection in their brethren. They have yet, however, to reveal themselves openly to the others in the village. When they do, it will be by doing bloody murder upon their person, since there are no more parasites for them to spread amongst the populace.
However, it may be that the innocent villagers have a chance to save themselves. A mysterious person, calling themselves "The Umpire" has come forward, and has called a town meeting, to lay out his plan for dealing with the horrible evil unleashed upon the village. Perhaps some few can be persuaded to prepare themselves to meet this terror with all the force they can muster.
This meeting will be held at 8pm on Wednesday 4th March in The Granta pub (near to Newnham College), coincidentally the time and location of End of Game Party for this term's main assassins game.
