The Committee

Presidents:

Caitlin Ellis - cme38

Ben

Living in Sussex for most of her life, Caitlin has grown used to Simon Keynes’ remarks during lectures about the most backward of Saxon kingdoms ‘where everyone was still living in the trees’. Much to the confusion of her peers, this Caian has taken the somewhat unusual approach of specialising in the Gaelic and Scandinavian aspects of ASNaC. She is completely mystified, however, by jokes requiring any detailed knowledge of Old English and by philology in general. Frequently found at the pub or sitting in the Common Room for no reason in particular.

Caroline Purse - cp456

Shelby

Caroline is a Clareite whose love of asnac has led her to become well-known among friends for her renditions of 'Beowulf', 'Pwyll' and 'The Viking Song' during a gebeorscip or other such revelries. Generally enthusiastic about most asnacy things, she floats between the Celtic and Germanic rivalries, unable to decide whether Old Irish or Old Norse terrifies her more. Her complete inability either to spell or pronounce any Medieval Welsh words doesn't diminish her enthusiasm for Celtic history and literature, and is (hopefully)compensated for by her being able to distinguish between the various Hakons and Haralds, and Æthelstans and Ælfgifus.
"Ure æghwylc sceal ende gebídan worolde lífes; wyrce sé þe móte dómes ær déaþe"
- 'For every one of us, living in this world means waiting for our end. Let whoever can win glory before death'

Beowulf

Vice-President

Carlotta Barbieri - csb61

Caroline

Before joining ASNC, Carlotta had a free and careless life, creating and selling beautiful hand-made candles, carved with magic runes and inspired by Celtic patterns alike. An ASNC hybrid, her heart is happily shared between the mead-fuelled impetuousness of the Vikings, and the mead-fuelled artistic visionary of the Celts. Fluent in four languages and dabbling in few more, her secret mission is to create a new, simplified version of Old Irish grammar based on Klingon and Linear A.
If you don’t find her much around, don’t worry, she might be lost in labyrinthine towers, studying ancient manuscripts under the influence of the All-Inspiring-Mead.

Secretary:

Becky Shercliff - rms90

Georgina

Also known as Arianwen, Becky spends most of her time falling in love with King Arthur and imagining that she is a shieldmaiden of Rohan. Enamoured of the Welsh language in general and the Old English compound noun in particular, she may be found with her nose in a book, drinking mead or frantically scribbling illegible notes in lectures, a skill which she hopes will aid her in her role as Secretary. She is going into her third year at St John’s and makes no apology for this.
Hige sceal Þe heardra, heorte Þe cenre, mod sceal Þe mare, Þe ure mæægen lytlað
- 'Spirit shall be the firmer, heart the bolder, courage the greater, as our strength lessens'

The Battle of Maldon

Treasurer:

Anna Larsson - all41

Joanna

Having grown up in the heartland of Viking age-Sweden just across from Birka Anna is a Newnhamite with trading (or raiding - whichever's most convenient) in her blood. Fierce as Fafnir she guards the ASNaC hoard, but may be talked into handing over a coin or two - provided that she is given the receipts. With a solid Germanic linguistic background she fears no amount of Norse translation - as long as no one asks her to explain WHY 'til' always takes the genitive. Or explain grammar at all come to that.

Social Secretary:

Sarah Mercer - sjm262

Adam

Known by the fitting nom de guerre "Viking Princess", Sarah manages to exude both glamour and danger in equal measure. Open to the idea of any 6 foot plus blond man who spends many hours a day rowing, it was perhaps not entirely unexpected that she would choose to devote herself to studies of a Germanic nature. Although quick to breathe fire if her innate superiority is called into question, (particularly in the area of Lord of the Rings trivia) all she really wants is to be loved (and chase Orcs through the woods with a big stick). Equally happy to party until the sun comes up as she is to chill with a pint, she is your contact for any revelry/debauchery you might have planned.

Gesta Editors:

Abi Rhodes - ar583

Ben

ASNC STRENGTH: The amazing ability to sing asnc related songs very loudly in various public places without feelings of embarrassment or shame :)

ASNC WEAKNESS: A tendency to say VERY embarrassing things in the presence of others even when sober... Interesting fact: I firmly hold onto the belief that as an asnc it is perfectly acceptable to watch 'Merlin' and, in fact, it actually counts as work...

Katie McIvor - km542

Becky

A second-year at Pembroke, this peace-loving Scot refuses to take sides in the on-going Germano-Celticist war, but harbours extreme racial prejudice against the Normans. She is proud of her Viking heritage and hopes one day to pillage Ireland. Some of her favourite things include cattle raids, hattefagols, Northumbrian earls, Old Irish prepositions and Medieval Welsh lecturers.
"Hit is langsum to atellanne eall hu hit gefaren wæs" - 'It is tedious to relate fully how things went.'
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

Axe-ess Officer:

Rob Howell - rh515

Robin

Rob is one of those strange people. And that means stranger than most ASNCs. While he has quite an obsession for all things Norse, most take weekends away from the Vikings, while Rob becomes one as a re-enactor. Though sometimes a touch absent minded, he aims to go raiding and steal as many people for ASNC as possible as his role as Axe-ess officer (Yes that is his own joke. Bless...)
"Deyr fe, deyja frændr, deyr siáltr it sama, en orztírr deyr aldregi, hveim er sér goðan getr."
- 'Cattle die, kinsmen die, the self dies likewise, but glory never dies, for him who gets himself good fame'

Yule Play Officers:

Adam Kirton - ak708

Anna

In the words of Prof. Simon Keynes, this crazy Catz member Adam 'is an interesting chap, who loves nothing more than to don his war gear and fight in battle.' Fighting, of course, as a warrior in Regia Anglorum. A Germanicist to the core, buy him a drink and he'll shout at you in Old English, (albeit with bad pronunciation), buy him another and you might even get to hear some of his war stories. Gentle at heart, he's as hospitable as Germanic tradition, and if you want a party, a picnic, or a nice quiet drink in a pub, then this is the guy who'll sort it for you.
"Gemunan ða mæla ðe we oft æt meodo spræcon, ðonne we on bence beot ahofon, hæleð on healle, ymbe heard gewinn; nu mæg cunnian hwa cene sy."
- 'Think of all the times we boasted at the mead bench, heroes in the hall predicting our own bravery in battle. Now we shall see who meant what he said.'

The Battle of Maldon

Page Sinclair - ak708

Anna

As with Carlotta, poor Page's Bio has also been swallowed. Again, any word on this sword forged in a dragon's breath, please send it to the Netwalda ASAP.

Catering Officer:

Katie Haworth - kdh32

Linda

Hailing from the Northumbrian hinterlands, Katie proudly takes up the mantle of Catering Officer, following a long-held tradition of Newnhamites in the role, providing a great feast in the Mead Hall (read: Common Room). A Germanicist at heart, long days of procrastination are spent puzzling over Old English poetry, dreaming about Icelandic sagas and promoting the correct grammatical use of 'The Northern Dative'.

Netwalda/ IT officer:

Rebecca Try - rt383

Robin

Celticist, through and through, Rebecca soon realised she was not cut out for the harsh winds of Scandinavian studies or the Smashing (read; smelly) Saxons, and instead chose to settle for the beautiful mysticism of Wales, Ireland and Scotland. She likes Ketchup.
"The tale of Mac Dathó's pig? Well it's this story about a dog..."

Grad Liason Officer:

David Baker - db409

Archiepiscopus Trinitatis:

Katherine Olley - ko302Robin

Katie, as the title suggests, is a Trinitarian, proud to shepherd the ASNaC flock. A devoted Germanicist she sympathises greatly with the Beowulf-poet in his lament for the passing of the heroic age but whilst she applauds the indomitable spirit shown by Krimhild in trapping her brother in a burning hall to avenge Siegfried´s death she would not recommend it as a healthy strategy for coping with stress, so if you´re searching for guidance as to what to do when your brother murders your beloved husband, feel the need for prayer for your immortal soul, led astray by the mead-soaked revelries of ASNaC pub, or just want someone to sympathise with you over Old Norse u-mutation, then she is here to help.
Gudrun (upon killing her sons):

"I´ve long wanted to cure you of old age."
