The Alternative Handbook

Clinical School Building

Whilst here, you'll spend a lot of your time in the Clinical School. You get to know your way around soon enough, but it's easier if you know basically what's where. With that in mind, here's a quick guide. If you do want more info, ask around or visit www.medschl.cam.ac.uk

Reception and Opening Hours

When you first go through the main doors of the Clinical School, the first thing you'll get to is Reception. For no apparent reason, you're now on level 2 - not the ground floor. If you're confused about this or don't know where things are, try asking the Custodians (it's not prison, they're just called that) at Reception; they're the people to see if a room's locked or something's broken. They're also responsible for keeping the Clinical School looking good, so please put any litter in the bins and don't eat in the computer room. The main building is only officially open Monday to Friday from 8am-9.30pm (not 10pm - beware) and Saturday, 9am - 4.30pm. You won't be able to get into the locker rooms outside these times, definitely something worth remembering if you're on call and your car keys are in there. Usually however, the Clinical School is open slightly earlier than 8am to allow people to grab their white coats before the surgical ward-rounds.

Sherwood Room
The Sherwood Room is a great place to chat, have lunch or just relax. It has newspapers, a TV, pool, ping-pong, a dart board, as well as a drinks machine and snacks (read: chocolate) machine. More important is the occasional visit from medical companies or drug reps, who are more than willing to ply you with free food and pens etc. Also check out the free food on Wednesday (it's laid on for the doctors going to Grand Round, but the lovely people in the Postgrad Centre bring it round for us to scavenge just after 1pm usually) On one wall are the pigeon-holes; they sometimes contain important information about attachments (and sometimes not), so it's worth checking yours from time to time. Most attachment info, however, comes in packs that are left in the Sherwood Room after 2pm on the last Friday before it starts. There are some toilets if you go through the door by the pool table.

Lecture Theatres and Seminar Rooms
Leave the Sherwood Room by the door near the pigeon-holes, or walk straight through from reception, and you'll find yourself by the public telephone and notice boards. Check them regularly. They're arranged by Phase and are vital for finding out what's going on. Also useful if you are thinking about your elective, as there is a board there that tells you all about the different organisations that help with funding. From there, the main doors lead to the huge William Harvey Lecture Theatre (WHLT) that you'll come to know and love from the first day, the Pathology Block course, and Grand Rounds, which happen every Wednesday at 1pm. Either side of the WHLT are seminar rooms (SR); numbers 1-5 are on the left and numbers 6-9, on the right. The smaller lecture theatre 2 (LT2) is right at the back and SR 9 is the computer room (with free printing = v imp)

Postgraduate Centre
Opposite the main entrance to the Sherwood Room is the Postgraduate Centre, a.k.a. the Consultants Lounge. It's got comfy chairs and is a nice place to sit with a newspaper or to chat. The bar in the corner is served by some lovely people and sells reasonably priced coffee, homemade soup, fresh cakes and sandwiches; its cheaper than the Concourse and usually much better food! Especially the cake - so many different flavours: it's heaven.

Library
This is on Level 3, the first floor up the stairs. Everyone has to register as a member here at some point, but don't worry if you forget on the first day. At some time in the first week, you'll get a fascinating tour of the place and that's as good a time as any. Photocopiers (buy cards from library staff) and toilets are found just inside, and through the doors on the left are the current journals and a staircase up to the back issues (and another photocopier). Beyond the shelves with the current issues is the Wolfson Computer Room, where you can access on-line journals and check e-mail - you need to set up your user account with the staff. Even if you don't want to look at their books, do check out the old Elective Reports which are stored here (ask at the desk). They're a fascinating resource for investigating where you want to go, who you should contact and how to pay for it all.

The library is open most of the time on weekdays. Weekend hours have recently been cut back though:
Monday to Friday:- 8am-10pm
Saturday:- 9am-5pm
Sunday:- closed.
If you want to see what they've got, check out their website at www.medschl.cam.ac.uk/library/library.html. Oh yes, and if your books are due back, you can renew them by phone once (see back pg for number).

Curriculum Office
Most of the admin staff live on the top floor, Level 4. There's also the committee room, the Dean's Office and the Curriculum Office, which is open Monday to Friday from 9am-1pm and 2pm-5pm. If you've got problems or queries relating to the course, the Curriculum Office can quickly solve most things or, at least, redirect you to the right person. One such problem would be parking; if you didn't fill in a form before you arrived, you'll have to contact Claire Smith in the Curriculum Office to sort things out. Travel expense forms are also available here and this is where you hand them in. Most importantly, if you have problems while on attachment or are ill and need to be absent, you must tell the Curriculum Office as well as letting your consultant know. If you don't, you might get in all sorts of problems later. Basically, the Curriculum Office is there to help, so keep them informed.

Locker rooms
Downstairs on Level 1, you'll find some toilets and the locker rooms. Everyone gets their own locker, so long as they pay a small deposit (£2); it's useful to have for keeping your white coat and stuff in. Unfortunately, there have been a few break-ins in the past and we'd advise you to keep your valuables with you at all times.

Messages
Any important messages about teaching (including infrequent post-mortem teaching), they're usually posted on a whiteboard near reception. Also other very important messages e.g. "Foad, your mercedes is about to be towed". The Custodians won't pass on personal messages except in a real emergency, so it's no use asking them.

Phones
Instant messages and e-mail are all well and good, but they'll never replace the phone. If you want a pay phone, there's one by the William Harvey Lecture Theatre and several more in the Concourse. For University or hospital extensions, there are two phones just by the Clinical School Reception. These are technically University extensions, so if you do want to bleep that SHO you promised to contact for:-
Addenbrooke's: dial 151 + number (e.g. 151 + 0 for switchboard)
Brookfields: 705 + number
Chesterton Hospital: 727 + number
Hinchingbrooke: 720 + number
Papworth: 721 + number
If you've got the reverse problem and want to dial a 5-digit university system number from a hospital extension, dial 84 + university extension number. So when you speak your bleep message, add the 84 before the number of the reception phone you are using.
